I’m back!!!!

  • February 7, 2012 3:42 pm

I just wanted to post a little note this afternoon to let you all know that…… I’m back!  It’s been a super busy couple months for me, both personally and professionally!!!  I hate that my blog that I love so much got neglected during this time.  Well little blog, feel neglected no more!  I will be posting more frequently and all my clients from late fall and winter will finally, FINALLY get to see their blog posts!  To let you know just a little about what I’ve been doing, here’s a pic of what will become my new office!!!  Yup…I’m moving up in the world.  I’m thrilled to have a real office (yes, it’s a real office even though it’s in my basement….if my husband is going to let me paint an accent wall ‘Katie McDonald Photography’ hot pink…it’s a real office)!  Oh couch and coffee table….I’ll miss you, but don’t worry we will see each other every Tuesday night for Glee!  ;)

What to do before 30 | Personal

  • August 12, 2011 1:57 pm

I’ve decided that I should start blogging about some more personal things.  After all, if you decide to book me as your wedding photographer (or if you already have) we will be spending A LOT of time together on wedding day, so I feel inclined to give you some insight into my personality…and my quirks, and they are a plenty!  : )

I turned 27 ½ a couple weeks ago.  Yes, I realize that I’m a grown woman who still acknowledges (and sometimes celebrates) half birthdays.  I also realize that it’s totally lame.  Please don’t judge.   As I’ve gotten older I’ve realized that there are  things that I want to do that I’ve never made time for or have just been too chicken to try.  So I’ve started to compile a list of things I’d like to do/accomplish/try/conquer before my 30th birthday….some are professional goals, some are personal…below is what I’ve got so far.

I’ve also created a little collage of some of my personal pics to share.  All of them were taken on my iPhone and edited with my new fav app Instagram….what they lack in quality, they make up for in fun!  They feature my hubby and I being our dorky selves, the eligible bachelor himself… and of course my fav people: my dogs Molly and Maggie!!!  Enjoy!!!!!

-Be a bridesmaid: I’ve been a bridesmaid a handful of times but it was all before I became a wedding photographer.  I feel like I would appreciate the experience so much more now that I see how much of their heart and soul brides and grooms put into the planning of their weddings and the choosing of their bridal parties….I feel like I kind of took it for granted when I was younger.  I’d like another chance. And another dress. And some more free booze. Thanks.

-Second shoot for another wedding photographer: I’ll be honest, I haven’t worked as a second shooter since I was in college, many moons ago.  I’d really like to work with another photog here in the DSM area and just see how they do things. It’d be a great chance to meet some awesome new people, capture some images I probably wouldn’t otherwise shoot and hey, maybe even learn something!!!

-Go on a cruise with my husband and our friends: We talk about it every year…how we need to go on a cruise and have an awesome, sunburned vacay with all our besties before we all decide to have kids.  Every year it doesn’t happen…..but maybe next year!!! ; ) If I can get my girlfriends to snooze that biological clock!

-Shoot a wedding that requires me to get a passport.  I shoot a couple destination weddings a year, but to-date they’ve all been domestic: Kentucky, Kansas, Missouri, Florida. My husband keeps telling me that I should really have a passport anyway, but wouldn’t a Mexican/Bahamian/European wedding be a nice excuse to finally actually get one? I think so.

-Find my bff Cory a wife!  He’s fun, he’s cute, he plays like a gazillion instruments. He’s a real catch.  Let me know if you know someone he should marry! ; )

-I want to network more, both personally and professionally…in person.  I network some online through websites like Facebook and the B School, but I need to do it out in the real world.  Maybe it’s time I stop talking about it and really join PPI or YPC…or say ‘Hi’ to young couples who seem nice at church. I guess you can never have too many friends; maybe it’s time I go out and make a few more.

- I want to run a 5K.  Brandon and I signed up for the John Deere 5K this August.  I swear I only agreed to do it because on the email it was officially called a ‘run/walk’ and Brandon promised I got a t-shirt.  Damn him and his knowledge of my obsession for event t-shirts!!!  I’m pretty sure the only reason I joined a sorority in college was for the t-shirts.  Anyway, chances are beyond good that I will be walking waaaayyy more than running at this 5K!!  I’d love to be able to train and actually run the whole way sometime.  But I guess the people that see me at the grocery sporting my 5K t-shirt won’t know that I walked the whole way, now will they? ; )

Mark and Amber | Engagement

  • April 15, 2011 2:43 pm

Mark and Amber are not only a totally gorgeous couple, but they are also super sweet, genuine people and I am honored to not only have them as clients, but as great friends!  My husband and I have been friends with Mark and Amber essentially since we moved here and it wasn’t too long ago that Amber and I used to sit at the boys’ ‘beer league’ softball games and talk and talk…….and talk about them getting married….one day!  Last year when Mark finally proposed I think that I may have been just as happy as Amber was!  Okay maybe not, but I was a for sure close 2nd!!!  Here are some of the pictures from their engagement session we did last fall.  Mark was SUCH a trooper going from location to location… and having more costume changes than Carrie Underwood at the CMA’s!!!  I can’t wait for their wedding tomorrow and I’m so honored to be their photographer!!!  Love you guys!!!!

Colton| Portrait Session

  • April 9, 2011 2:14 pm

So if you and I have ever had a conversation, it’s pretty obvious I’m not from around here!  I have an accent (though it’s getting better the longer I’m in Iowa) that is unmistakably southern!  I grew up in Kentucky and only moved here after my husband Brandon started his job with John Deere.  Last week I decided to take a couple days and fly home before my wedding season gets into full swing and I don’t have time to see my fam until the holidays.  I was able to shoot some images around the University of Kentucky campus and had some head shots done of me (weird) which I will hopefully post later this week!

But right now I want to share some images I shot of Colton….who is maybe the cutest kid I’ve ever seen!!!  I may be a little partial because I’ve been friends with his mom, Erin, since we were literally in pre-school…yeah, like forever!  But still, he’s pretty cute!  He is three and he is basically the size of a six year old; I’m pretty sure that UK has already created a scouting report on this kid…. Ummmm Josh Harrelson who? Anyway… we started this session on Erin’s dad’s farm (which made me SUPER nostalgic because it’s where I spent the majority of my childhood) and ended at a local baseball diamond!

Friends and Family of Colton can view his entire session here: http://www.photoreflect.com/pr3/store.aspx?p=53596

Okay...this image was a total outtake! To appease Colton between posing we let him play with this random stick he found and he loved it! It was just so him and so dang cute I just couldn’t delete it!

For my inaugural post, I thought I’d share some pics of my two great assistants….my dogs Molly and Maggie!   They don’t have mad Photoshop skills and they aren’t very handy with an SLR….but their cuteness goes a long way!  : )
