Paige and Kalvin were not some of my wedding clients…they were pseudo-newlyweds referred to me to do some family shots. Turns out they didn’t really have any images of them other than their wedding pics….and it’s probably weird to use your wedding pictures as every Christmas card photo until you have kids!
So we met at Water Works Park to shoot some images of them in clothes more suited for holiday greetings! Now I hope that all of my wedding clients end up just like Paige and Kalvin! They’ve been married a little over a year but they still have that ‘just married’ glow! They are adorable together and seem to have adjusted just perfectly to married life. Plus they have an awesome four-legged adopted fur-baby….and I’m a sucker for other weirdos amazing people that treat their dogs like human children! After Water Works we headed downtown for some more pics and wardrobe changes. Here are a few of my favorite images from their cute little family….enjoy!
Paige and Kalvin | Family Session
I’m back!!!!
I just wanted to post a little note this afternoon to let you all know that…… I’m back! It’s been a super busy couple months for me, both personally and professionally!!! I hate that my blog that I love so much got neglected during this time. Well little blog, feel neglected no more! I will be posting more frequently and all my clients from late fall and winter will finally, FINALLY get to see their blog posts! To let you know just a little about what I’ve been doing, here’s a pic of what will become my new office!!! Yup…I’m moving up in the world. I’m thrilled to have a real office (yes, it’s a real office even though it’s in my basement….if my husband is going to let me paint an accent wall ‘Katie McDonald Photography’ hot pink…it’s a real office)! Oh couch and coffee table….I’ll miss you, but don’t worry we will see each other every Tuesday night for Glee!
Katie and Josh | Engagement
I get blessed with the absolute coolest clients! Now, this is either because I’m super cool myself and coolness attracts coolness….or, because the powers that be think that by sending me super cool clients I might learn something, thus upping my cool quotient. My guess is it’s the latter and that Katie and Josh were sent to me because specifically because they are so, super, super cool. I mean they got engaged in Vegas which I think is about the coolest thing ever! And they only wanted to shoot downtown which meant that I got to go to some of my favorite urban locations! Plus Katie wore these amazing leopard heels that she bought in Vegas….beyond cool. I had the best time with Katie and Josh and I cannot wait to see how unbelievably cool their wedding will be!!! Here are a few of my many, many favs from their session….enjoy!
Samantha and Adam | Engagement
Samantha and Adam are planning a wedding that, frankly I’m super excited about! They are going to get married at the Capitol which I think is sooooo special and fantastic!!! They are a really in love and super fun couple and that was so evident during their engagement session! We started at Water Works Park for some “family” pictures with their awesome pup Buckley and then went downtown to shoot some more urban inspired shots with Adam in his uniform. And if their best man (who acted as dog wrangler, groom entertainer and Samantha’s personal stylist) is any indication….the wedding party is going to be a blast! I am just thrilled to be working with them! Here are some of my favs from their session…..Enjoy!
Bruenek Family | Portraits
I wear black boots and jeans to almost all my family and engagement sessions….I walk through some pretty grimy areas in order to get some of my shots, so boots are a must! Who would have ever thought that wearing black boots would have been the key to eternal friendship with a three-year old little girl! As soon and the Bruenek family got out of their car for our session their little girl said “Oh…you have boots like me” and pointed to her tiny black Uggs! From that moment on we were bffs! Now, like their three-year old, the rest of the family was totally and completely awesome!!! I had soooo much fun with them! I can’t wait until next fall when we do their family pictures again! I am very eager to see how these kids grow up!!! Mom and Dad- you’re gonna have your hands full I think! ; ) Here are my favs from their session at Water Works park…..enjoy!!!
Stephanie and Kori | Wedding
Ceremony: St. John’s Lutheran Church
Reception: Forte
DJ: ABCDJ
Stephanie, Kori, their bridal party and their families are the coolest people I know! I kid you not, I could not have had more fun at Stephanie and Kori’s wedding had I been a guest!! I’ve gotten to know Stephanie and her family pretty well over the last year. We met for coffee a lot to discuss their wedding and they kept me updated as they got everything planned and so I really felt like part of the whole wedding, not just the pictures!! Stephanie and Kori decided not to see each other before the ceremony…they wanted that first moment he saw her coming down the aisle to be magical, and it totally was!!! Kori was so nervous before the ceremony that he actually looked at me and said “Oh, Katie….I think I might throw up!!!!” He was ADORABLE!!! But all those nerves melted away when he got a glimpse at how unbelievable Stephanie looked! The ceremony was perfect!!! They had the most fun I’ve ever seen a wedding party have during the limo ride to the reception!!! And their reception was out of this world!!! The toasts were heartfelt and creative and musical….yes, musical!!! The best man (who had K<3 S painted into his hair, btw) sang his very unique toast! Once the formalities were over their guests really let loose!!! Their reception was for sure the best party in Des Moines that night!!! I had a really hard time narrowing down my favorites from this wedding because it was so fun and every one involved was seriously gorgeous!!! Thanks Stephanie and Kori for letting me share your wedding with you, you’re awesome!!! And to the bride’s parents: yes, I still want you to adopt me! ; ) Here are my favs from this awesome wedding…..enjoy!!!
Casi and Matt | Engagement
Casi and Matt are adorable, like really, really adorable. When I met with them the first time I felt like I was sitting across from a couple I cut out of a J.Crew catalog and taped to the booth at Panera!! Casi was hard at work crafting save-the-date props for their session up until the night before and all her hard work totally paid off! She worked that glue gun like a pro and so her props were simply adorable, just like them!!! I am so excited for their Simon Estes wedding next September!!! If they look this good in regular clothes (albeit perfectly styled regular clothes) I cannot imagine how gorgeous they will look in their wedding attire!!! Here are some of my favs from their session….enjoy!!!
Nicole and Matt | Engagement
When I got into my car after my first meeting with Nicole and Matt I kept saying to myself (yes out loud, because I totally do that) over and over ‘Oh I hope they book me, oh I hope they book me!!!!’ I adored them from the get-go….they just seemed super fun and all kinds of awesome! And I quickly figured out during their engagement session that not only are they for sure all kinds of awesome… but they’re also funny, like REALLY funny!!! We started out at Water Works Park for some fall foliage then headed downtown for some neat urban-ness!! We were even able to end the session in a way that was totally ‘Nicole and Matt’!!! We used the building where they first met as a backdrop while Nicole wore her beloved Lady Gaga t-shirt!!! I’m not sure I can wait until April for their wedding, I’m super pumped about it because it’s gonna be a blast!!! Thanks guys for making work seem like anything but work!!! Here are a few of my favs from their session…enjoy!!!!

Pretty sure we almost witnessed a drug deal in the area this image was shot....for reals I rock at finding unsafe photo locations! ; )

We laughed a lot during their session, like A LOT...mostly at Matt's semi-inappropriate, yet totally hilarious comments!!!
Jessica and Chris | Engagement
Jessica and Chris were referred to me by my dear friends and clients Mark and Amber. Now since they were a referral from Mark and Amber I knew that we’d be a good match right away, because let’s face it…Mark and Amber wouldn’t send me someone lame! : ) And I was right, Jessica and Chris were awesome!! I had so much fun shooting their session that I was a little bummed when the sun totally set and the session was over! Jessica is a girl after my own heart…she wears adorable clothes (even if her fiancé doesn’t quite ‘get’ them, she blog stalks, brought a gazillion wardrobe choices and created props for their pictures!!! Oh my….I just LOVE me a prop!!!! : ) And the best part of everything was that Chris just went with the flow, he was sooo laid back…apparently he’s already learned “Happy wife, happy life”!!!! They are for sure destined for marital bliss!!! Here are a few of my favs from their session!!! Enjoy!!!

Jessica brought this fab chair with her....I think it fit just perfectly with the sunset and the amazing grasses!
Carmen and Jamie | Engagement
I believe in fate. I believe in soul mates. Carmen and Jamie are soul mates that fate brought together…they met on a blind date!!! Now if that’s not fate, I don’t know what is! They are planning a fab spring wedding at one of my favorite venues, The Scottish Rite!!! You guys were awesome to work with and I can’t wait ‘till wedding day!!!! Here are some of my favs from their engagement session….enjoy!!!!
